Anna Kova's Sultry Swagger Will Get Your Heart 'Beatin'
It is fair to say that our serendipitous YouTube introduction to French singer Anna Kova back in 2014 was very much a 'wow' moment: her mouth framed in an anonymous close-up, the honeyed sensuality and sultry, sing-song cadence of her jazzy freestyle delivery proved to be instantly and irresistibly enchanting (and is always a pleasure to re-visit, see the following video) -
Combining a rolling, hip-hop infused swagger with the jazzy, soulful nonchalance of a maturely poised neo-soul singer, Kova's distinctive voice and delivery came with its own confident, refreshing originality. Bearing out her range of musical influences - including the likes of Amy Winehouse, Etta James, Lauryn Hill, Mary J Blige and Jhene Aiko - her 2014 MHAW EP (reacquaint yourself below) was an eclectic confection of blues, jazz, soul and hip-hop inspired beats that were the perfect foil for the soulful, jazzy hues of her voice.
Going on to make a splash last year with featured vocals on French electronic production team Synapson's 'All In You', Kova is back in 2016 with the first song, the MiM-produced 'Beatin', from her upcoming project. A bubbling, nebulous amalgam of aqueous accents and muted horn swells that ramps up into an urgently frantic piano-and-synth crescendo, 'Beatin' sees Kova's unique vocal flow seamlessly morph from neo-soul murmur to a snappy MC-like cadence to mirror the confusing churn of emotions that come with the song's matters-of-the-heart turbulence.
