Allie's 'Strange Creature' EP Is Really Something Quite Beautiful...
It was one of those rare moments of Soundcloud serendipity when we came across Canadian singer/songwriter allie (Allie Ho Sang) earlier in the year - one of those moments when you know you have indeed found a singularly special talent. Her rich, sultry voice can one moment be nonchalantly cool , the next effortlessly infused with a dreamy euphoria; it can be alluringly playful, then knowingly assured; her mature vocal delivery is a study in sophisticated subtlety that emphasizes her keenly observant and artfully composed lyrics as she seeks to traverse an emotional landscape that stretches from self-possession to a willing vulnerability.
Based in Toronto, allie has just released her debut EP 'Strange Creature', a collection of four songs produced by 2ND SON, with her diverse cultural heritage, comprising Jamaican, Chinese, Irish, Scottish and Italian ancestry, informing her desire to draw from a broad range of influences, including jazz, blues, r'n'b, hip-hop and even spoken word, as she cultivates a musical sensibility that is sui generis, a sound that is uniquely and distinctively her own, 'I want to create a platform through which I can share my music and my stories, my struggles and my successes, and most of all my deepest and most personal honest truth'.
'Strange Creature' is instinctively cohesive and superbly crafted, compelling the the listener to pay attention so as to fully appreciate the sophistication on display; 'Cross My Mind', for which we premiered the video in May, sees her cautious, yet drawn to the intoxicating allure of a certain someone, with allie conflicted by both her attraction and wariness, her sultry vocal carried by the track's fluid ambience, funky guitar lick and bass pulse; 'Rlctnt Hstlr''s tribal drum and ominously creeping low end, punctuated by a funky guitar, creates a mildly sinister vibe as allie's soulful hush narrates her nocturnal adventures - the outstanding syncretization of her musical influences into sonically unique and refreshingly captivating soundscapes by 2ND SON's production is superbly complemented on the EP by allie's creative, ear-catching vocal melodies, uniquely soulful and expressively intuitive vocal delivery and her emotionally literate, intelligent songwriting.
Having had her song 'Cross My Mind' be handpicked to feature on the Mercedes Benz 'Mixed Tape', allie was recently the first vocalist to be signed to the Huh, What & Where label alongside prominent beatmakers like Elaquent, with whom she has previously collaborated, Kaytranada and Ta-ku, and, as her Facebook and Twitter handle, 'alliemoves', suggests, you can be sure that the supremely talented Allie Ho Sang is moving in one direction only in the music industry - up.
